Eastern Kentucky University soccer players Monica Rios and Zoe Aguirre were named to the Ohio Valley Conference All-Tournament Team on Sunday.
Rios and Aguirre helped EKU advance to the OVC semifinals for the third straight season. The Colonels fell to No. 1 UT Martin, 3-2, in a heartbreaker on Friday night in Martin.
Rios – a second team All-OVC midfielder – gave EKU an early lead at Martin when she buried a long-range shot from 10 yards outside the box less than a minute into the second half. The senior also played 86 minutes and attempted another shot on frame in the Colonels’ shutout of No. 5 SIUE in the OVC quarterfinals on October 28.
Aguirre – an OVC All-Newcomer Team selection – earned her sixth shutout of the season against SIUE in the OVC quarterfinals, making six saves. The freshman goalkeeper’s stop on SIUE’s final penalty kick attempt sent the Colonels on to the semifinals. Versus UT Martin on Friday night, Aguirre was spectacular, matching her career-high with 13 saves to keep the Colonels in the game.
