No. 10 Louisville Swim & Dive Stands in First After Day 1 at Purdue Invitational

The No. 10 University of Louisville Cardinals are sitting in first place after the first night of the 3-day Purdue Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind.

The Louisville men are first with 293.5 points followed by Purdue (213.5), California Baptist (146), Northwestern (144.5), Missouri State (104.5), Navy (70) and Southern Illinois (51). The Louisville women posted a score of 325 to lead the field. Northwestern was second (233) followed by Northwestern (233), Purdue (144), Florida International (123), Missouri State (83), Illinois State (61), California Baptist (52), Southern Illinois (32) and Marshall (29).

The Cardinals won all four relays and two individual races to cap off the first day of racing. 

The women wasted no time in making an impression putting up an A-cut time of 1:27.03 in the 200 medley relay. Cardinals Gabi Albiero (22.09), Christiana Regenauer (21.54), Julia Dennis 21.55 and Ella Welch (21.85) were first into the wall to win the 200 freestyle relay. The time is the fastest time in the nation in this event.

The men followed suit with a win the 200 free relay, when Abdelrahman El-Araby (19.62), Dalton Lowe (19.07), Vlad Dubinin (19.64) and Michael Eastman (18.85) put up a 1:17.28 for first and a B-cut. Their time is ranked No. 2.

In the 500 freestyle, Liberty Williams held off Northwestern’s Lola Mull to board a time of 4:40.33 for the win and earn a B-cut.

The Cardinal men, in a tour de force, took the top four spots in the 500 free and five of the top six spots. Gustavo Saldo was into the wall first with a 4:17.06, followed by Murilo Sartori’s second place time of 4:18.39 and Denis Loktev’s third place time of 4:20.45. Illia Sibirtsev was fourth in 4:22.60 and Eli Shoyat was sixth with a time of 4:24.54.

The Cardinals took the top three spots led by Tristen Ulett, who held on for the win in 1:57.24 in 200 IM, staving off teammate Abby Hay’s second place time of 1:57.97. Fernanda Celidonio was third in 1:59.14 and Paige Hetrick was fifth with a time of 2:00.09.  The top three times were good for a B-cut. For the Louisville men, Jackson Millard was fourth with a time of 1:47.84 just ahead of teammate Luke Shourds’s 1:48.23.

In the women’s 50 free, Northwestern’s Jasmine Nocentini won with a time of 21.59. Christiana Regenauer was second, going  21.89 and Gabi Albiero was third, boarding a 21.90. Louisville’s Julia Dennis was fourth (22.42), Karoline Barrett was fifth (22.46) and Ella Welch was fifth in 22.46.

For the men, Abdelrahman El-Araby tied for second with a time of 19.58 matching times with Purdue’s Brady Samuels. Cal Baptist’s Remi Fabiani had the victory, stopping the clock at 19.36.  Louisville’s Michael Eastman was fifth in 19.80, Dalton Lowe was sixth (19.83) and Vlad Dubinin was seventh (19.88).

In women’s 3M diving, Louisville’s Jiselle Miller posted a score of 277.95 was fourth, Lindsay Gizzi was fifth with a mark of 290.70.  In men’s 1M diving, Adam Sneden was the top finisher for the Cards with a fifth place mark of 291.05. Che Stephens was seventh with a 335.70.

In the 400 Medley Relay, the Cardinal foursome of Abby Hay (43.41), Cecilia Viberg (59.31), Tristen Ulett (52.00) and Gabi Albiero (47.50) combined forces to post a 3:32.22 for a B-Cut and the win.  The men’s 400 Medley Relay team of Dalton Lowe (46.73), Denis Petrashov (51.75), Abdelrahman El-Araby (46.65) and Murilo Sartori (42.99) won with a time of 3:08.12.
