The second-ranked Thomas More University women’s basketball team used a big second half to defeat 21st-ranked DePauw University, 71-56, today (Saturday, December 29, 2018) in the championship game of the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Tournament inside Neal Fieldhouse in Greencastle, Indiana.  The Saints remain undefeated at 17-0 and the Tigers fall to 9-3.

FIRST HALF:

  • Thomas More led 16-14 after one quarter and led 31-30 at halftime.
  • The Saints host 50 percent from the field (14-of-28) from the field in the opening half.
  • Thomas More had a 16-8 advantage on points in the paint.
  • Senior guard Madison Temple (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) led the team with 17 points and nine rebounds.
  • Junior forward Emily Schultz (Melbourne, Ky./Bishop Brossart) tallied four points and four rebounds.

SECOND HALF:

  • Thomas More out-scored DePauw 21-11 in the third quarter to extend the lead to 52-11 after three quarters and had a 19-15 advantage in the fourth to post the 71-56 victory.
  • The Saints led by as many as 21 points when Temple made a three-pointer with 3:30 to play in the fourth quarter to make the score 67-46.
  • Temple scored 11 points, pulled down four rebounds and had two assists in the second half.
  • Junior guard Kaela Saner (Florence, Ky./Boone County) tallied seven points and two assists in the closing half.
  • Sophomore guard Briana McNutt (Maysville, Ky./Mason County) had six points and four rebounds in the half.

NOTABLES:

  • Thomas More shot 49.1 percent (28-of-57) from the field and held DePauw to 35.3 percent (18of-51) shooting.
  • The Saints had a 34-18 advantage on points in the paint and 10-2 on fast break points.
  • Temple was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) and recorded a double-double in the game as she had 28 points and 13 rebounds to go with three assists and two steals.
  • Schultz was named to the All-Tournament team and had nine points, seven rebounds and three assists.
  • Saner finished with nine points, two assists and four rebounds.
  • McNutt had eight points, five rebounds and two assists.

UP NEXT:

  • Thomas More has a quick turnaround as it returns to action tomorrow (Sunday, December 30) when it hosts in-state rival Centre College at 2 p.m. inside the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
  • The Saints will honor Temple prior to tip-off for setting the Thomas More women’s basketball all-time scoring record on Friday.
