The University of Kentucky men’s tennis team will open its 2016 fall season on Thursday afternoon in Lafayette, La., as the Wildcats will be taking part in the 2016 John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic in a tournament hosted by the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns.
Kentucky’s junior stud William Bushamuka is the top-seeded player in the main draw of the singles tournament and one of four UK players making the trip to Lafayette this weekend along with Nils Ellefsen, Beck Pennington and Jake Stefanik.
“I am excited to get the fall going,” UK head coach Cedric Kauffmann said, who enters his fifth year at the helm of Kentucky men’s tennis. “I feel that we have a lot of players who can position themselves to have a good year in the fall. Leadership and grit on and off the court will decide the type of year that we are going to have.”
Bushamuka will get the tournament underway at 9 a.m. ET on Thursday morning as he faces LaLa’s Jamie Fraser at the top of the hour. Also at 9 a.m. ET will be UK’s Nils Ellefsen facing Oklahoma State’s Lukas Finzelberg.
The other two UK players making the trip will get underway at 11 a.m. ET with Beck Pennington – returning from injury – facing off against Julian Saborio from LSU. Additionally, at 11 a.m. ET, Kentucky’s Jake Stefanik will play Arjun Kadhe, who is a seeded player from Oklahoma State.
In the doubles competition, Bushamuka and Pennington will team up for Kentucky and play at 2:30 p.m. ET on Friday against Grey Hamilton and Fabian Fallert of Southeastern Conference foe, Ole Miss. The other doubles match scheduled for UK features Stefanik and Ellefsen teaming up to face Thibault Forget and Jack Jaede from Southern California.
Action begins at 9 a.m. CT on Thursday with Championship Singles play before continuing with Championship/Consolation play at 12:30 p.m.
The tournament is named for John Breaux, a graduate and former tennis student-athlete at then Southwestern Louisiana from 1961-64, and would later serve as a United States Senator from 1987 until 2005.
