The University of the Cumberlands men’s basketball team shot 53% from the field, including 57% from behind the arc as the Patriots defeated Ohio Christian 86-47 Wednesday night at the O. Rollins Center. With the win the Patriots improve to 4-1, while the Trailblazers fall to 4-2.

Both teams got off to a slow start as the two teams started the game a combined 0-8 from the field. Carmearl Thomas and Marquis Jackson combined for the first seven points of the contest to give Ohio Christian an early 7-0 lead. The Patriots minutes later with a 15-3 run, including eight straight points by Eddie Tornes to put Cumberlands ahead 15-10 with 11:46 remaining in the first half. Bernard Samuel netted eight of Cumberlands next 18 points to extend the Patriots lead to 33-23 with 3:04 remaining. The Patriots ended the first half on an 11-0 run to give Cumberlands a 44-23 advantage at the break.

Cumberlands hot shooting continued in the second half as Marquis Yates scores the first seven points of the second half to give the Patriots a 51-23 advantage with 17:48 remaining. The two teams traded buckets, before Tornes and Eric Duncan combined to hit three straight three-pointers to 34 points with 12:30 left in the second half. Cumberlands went on a 21-11 run over the course of the next eight minutes to extend their lead to 83-39. The Trailblazers ended the game on a 9-3 run for the 86-47 final.

Leading the way for the Patriots was Samuel who scored a team-high 22 points, including 20 in the first half. Tornes finished with 14 points, including a season-high four three pointers, while Duncan netted 11. Chance Morton and Yates added ten points apiece. Kelsley Wilkinson grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and was one of three players to dish out three assists in the win.

Cumberlands shot a season-high 56.5% from three-point range, while holding Ohio Christian to 34% from the field and forcing 14 turnovers.

The Patriots will return to the court Friday, November 11, when they travel to Bluefield, VA to take part in the Bluefield College Bowen Classic. Cumberlands will face Bluefield at 7 p.m. and then play Bluefield State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
