Sophomore forward Abigail Stewart (LaGrange, Ky.) netted a career-high 17 points, but the Centre women’s basketball team dropped a 63-55 decision to Huntingdon in the Holiday Inn and Suites Classic hosted by Oglethorpe on Saturday at Dorough Gymnasium.
The Colonels fall to 2-7 with the loss, while the Hawks improve to 5-1 on the season.
After owning a 47-36 advantage after three quarters, Huntingdon gained its largest lead of the night of 15 points at 51-36 with 8:45 remaining in the game.
Centre would outscore the Hawks 19-12 for the rest of the contest, as the Colonels shot 87.5 percent (7-of-8) from the free throw line in the final period.
With Huntingdon holding a 61-46 lead with just over two minutes to play, Centre closed the game on a 9-2 run keyed by an old-fashioned 3-point play by sophomore forward Day Vance (Knoxville, Tenn.).
Stewart finished 8-of-18 from the field in the contest for the Colonels, tallying 11 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter. Vance grabbed a career-high 14 boards for Centre, while junior guard Paige Kellam (Hebron, Ky.) added six points, four rebounds and four assists for the Colonels.
Jello Weatherspoon paced three Hawks in double-figures with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while Juliette Harp grabbed a game-high 19 rebounds to go with 13 markers. Jenna Dorman also chipped in 13 points.
Centre shot 31.7 percent (20-of-63) from the field and 65.0 percent (13-of-20) from the charity stripe. The Colonels were 13.3 percent (2-of-15) from behind the arc in the loss, but the Hawks were 0-of-12 from long range while shooting 40.9 percent (27-of-66) on field goals and 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from the free throw line.
Huntingdon held a 45-40 rebounding edge and held a 40-30 advantage in points in the paint.
The Colonels surrendered just 11 turnovers in the contest, their second-fewest total of the season.
Centre is back in action tomorrow afternoon facing off with Methodist at 2 p.m. ET again in the Holiday Inn and Suites Classic at Oglethorpe.
