Kentucky track and field’s Jasmine Camacho-Quinn enters her sophomore season as one of the nation’s most heralded athletes. Said assertion was confirmed by her place on the Bowerman Award Preseason Watch List, which the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Wednesday.
The Bowerman Award is the most prestigious individual award in collegiate track and field. Camacho-Quinn is one of 10 athletes to make the preseason watch list.
Her sophomore season kicked off in strong form last month as she ran a 60m hurdles PR 8.10. That mark leads the nation this early season as many teams will begin their seasons in the coming weeks.
Camacho-Quinn finished her freshman campaign as well as just about any rookie has in NCAA history.
She became the first freshman to win the NCAA 100-meter hurdles championship in June, and went on to win the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association (NACAC) Under-23 Gold Medal and advance to the Olympic Semifinal competing for Puerto Rico.
In May she won the Southeastern Conference Championship in her signature event.
She went undefeated against collegiate competition in 2016 100m hurdles finals (training partner, world-record holder and 2015 Bowerman Finalist, Kendra Harrison beat Camacho-Quinn across the line in April).
Camacho-Quinn also exhibited her incredible potential in multiple events as she made the NCAA final in the outdoor 200m.
While her breakout came outdoors, Camacho-Quinn did earn SEC All-Freshman Team honors in the 60m hurdles indoors last season.
She was named Southeast Region Outdoor Athlete of the Year by USTFCCCA a year ago.
Camacho-Quinn was named to the Bowerman Watch List for the first time.
