Centre WBB Downed by Oglethorpe 57-45

The Centre women’s basketball team suffered a 57-45 setback to visiting Oglethorpe in a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) matchup at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Colonels fell to 6-15 overall and 4-6 in SAA play with the loss, while the Stormy Petrels improve to 13-6 on the season and 7-3 in conference action.

After Centre closed the first quarter with five straight points to take an 11-10 lead, Oglethorpe outscored the Colonels 21-7 in the second period to gain a 31-18 advantage into the break.

The Stormy Petrels built their lead to as many as 17 points at 42-25 with 5:43 to play in the third quarter, when Centre responded with a 9-1 run capped by a jumper by senior guard Caroline Andreassen (Kenosha, Wis.) to shrink Oglethorpe’s edge to 43-34 at the end of three periods.

The Colonels stretched their surge to 13-1 after sophomore forward Abigail Stewart (LaGrange, Ky.) knocked down a pair of baskets to open the fourth quarter, minimizing the deficit to five points at 43-38 with just under eight minutes to play in the game.

The Stormy Petrels responded with a 12-4 spurt to take a 55-42 lead before holding on for a 12-point victory.

Sophomore forward Day Vance (Knoxville, Tenn.) notched her first career double-double with team-highs of 10 points and 11 rebounds to go with a game-high three steals.

Stewart finished with six markers and seven boards on the night.

Jada Triplett had a game-high 23 points for Oglethorpe on 5-of-14 shooting with an 11-of-17 showing at the charity stripe. Lauren Ransom posted a double-double of 14 points and 11 boards for the Stormy Petrels.

Centre shot 32.7 percent (18-of-55) from the field, including 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from behind the arc.

Oglethorpe outrebounded the Colonels 44-41 in the contest, while Centre held advantages of 20-14 in points off turnovers, 20-18 in points in the paint and 15-10 in bench points.

The Colonels close the home portion of the 2016-17 regular season on Sunday afternoon hosting Berry at 1 p.m. ET at Alumni Gymnasium. Centre will honor seniors Caroline Andreassen, Olivia Alford and Katie Rogers.
