Thomas More Wrestling Finishes Seventh at John Summa Invitational

The Thomas More College wrestling team finished seventh today (Saturday, February 4, 2017) at the 31st Annual John Summa Invitational hosted by Baldwin Wallace University inside the Higgins Center Fieldhouse in Berea, Ohio.

First-year John Shirkey (Erlanger, Ky./LaSalle (Ohio)) finished third at 133 with a 5-1 record. He had a 15-0 technical fall win in the first round and then loss on a pin in the second round, but in the consolation bracket he had a pin in 4:05 and 1:05 and a 12-7 decision win to advance to the third place match. In the third place match, Shirkey earned a medical forfeit win.

First-year Tristin Badida (Burlington, Ky./Conner) went 6-2 at 157 and finished fifth. He had a pin in 1:43 in the first round and then fell by a pin in the second round, but in the consolation bracket he had a 4-1 decision win, a pin in 1:09, an 8-3 decision win and a pin in 6:35 before suffering a 16-1 technical fall loss. Badida won his fifth place match with a pin in 1:08.

At 184, first-year Avery Jones (Amelia, Ohio/Glen Este) went 3-2 with a pin in 4:56, 5:34 and 1:34. First-year Andrew Taylor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) had 3-2 mark at 174 with a 12-10 sudden victory, a pin in 1:18 and a 9-5 decision win.

Thomas More returns to action next Saturday (February 11) when it travels to Washington, Pennsylvania to compete at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship. The championship will get underway at 11 a.m. inside the Henry Memorial Center on the campus of Washington & Jefferson College.
