Murray State Track & Field Shows Promise At First Outdoor Event

The Murray State Racers competed in their first outdoor meet of the spring at the Ole Miss – Joe Walker Invitational in Oxford, Mississippi.

Here are the Racers’ best finishes in the event that took place Friday night and most of the day Saturday in Oxford.

Sprints
Tamdra Lawrence just missed winning the 100 meter run with a time of 12.11, just behind the winning time of 11.93. Daijah White placed sixth with a time of 12.40 and Norma Abdur-Rafia was eighth at 12.41.

In the 200 meter run, Lawrence finished third with a time of 23.87 and Abdur-Rafia finished eighth with a time of 24.23. Lawrence and Abdur-Rafia each posted personal records.

Taylor McCammon was 11th in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.77, while Jabreuna Brimlett was 14th at 15.13.

Middle Distance
With a 12th place showing, Ali Hester led MSU in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:40.

In the 400 meter hurdles, Taylor Adcock placed 10th with a time of 1:07.

Distance
Meagan Smith ran a 17:46 and earned a spot in third place in the 5000 meter run, while teammate Maura Farrell placed sixth at 18:07. In all, the Racers had four runners in the top-12 with Caroline Grogan placing eighth with a time of 18:11 and it was a 12th place showing for Emily Flaherty at 18:39. Allison Burgin was 18th at 20:18.

Mason Swenson was MSU’s top finisher in the steeplechase with a time of 11:11 and a spot in fourth place, while Hester placed fifth at 11:15. Ida Mutai set a PR with an eighth place finish at 11:51.

Field Events
Hope Tewes was an eighth place finisher in the high jump with a leap of 5-feet 1-inch.

In the hammer throw, Jewel Wagner had a 14th place showing with a toss of 131-feet and 10.5 inches, which was also her personal record.
Kristen Higgins placed 14th in the javelin with a throw of 95-feet and 10.75 inches.

Relays
The Racers had a good meet at Ole Miss in relays with a second and a third place finish.

MSU’s team of D’Myia Thornton, Norma Abdur-Rafia, Hilary McAdam and Jocelyn Payne placed second in the 4×400 meter event with a time of 3:47. MSU took third in the 4×100 meter relay as the team of McCammon, Abdur-Rafia, Payne and Lawrence had a time of 46.42.

Heptathlon
Murray State’s Brimlett and McCammon placed fifth and sixth in the Heptathlon, while Aubrey Main placed 10th. Brimlett won the 100 meter hurdles segment.

Next Up
The Racers host the Margaret Simmons Invitational Friday at Roy Stewart Stadium and at the same time, some of the team will be in St. Louis, Missouri, at Washington University.
