Thomas More Men’s Tennis Defeats Bethany and Saint Vincent

The Thomas More College men’s tennis team earned two Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) wins today (Sunday, April 9, 2017) at the Ewing Tennis Courts in Bethany, West Virginia. The Saints defeated Bethany College, 8-1, and Saint Vincent College, 6-3.

With the sweep, the Saints improve to 12-5 overall and 6-1 in the PAC.

In the first match of the day the Saints led Bethany 3-0 after doubles play. The No. 1 tandem of sophomore Derrick Kwok (Sugar Land, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) and first-year Michael Kenney (Carmel, Ind./Guerin Catholic) won 8-2, the No. 2 team of first-years Cameron Shi (China/Scott (Ky.)) and Sheldon Preisler (San Diego, Calif./Boone County (Ky.)) won 8-3 and the No. 3 pair of first-years Logan Daniels (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) and Wesley Smith (Versailles, Ky./Woodford County) won 8-1.

Thomas More won five of the six matches in singles to cruise to the 8-1 victory. Shi won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2, Kenney won 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3, Preisler won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4, sophomore Christian Gil (Auburn, Ill./Conner) won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 and Smith won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.

In the second match of the day Thomas More defeated previous PAC unbeaten Saint Vincent 6-3. The Saints opened the match with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles where Kwok and Kenney defeated the defending PAC champions at that flight. Shi and Preisler won 9-8 (7-3) at No. 2 and Daniels and Smith were 8-1 winners at No. 3 to complete the doubles sweep.

Thomas More won three of the six singles matches to clinch the victory. Kenney won 6-0, 7-5 at No. 3, Preisler won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 and Smith won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.

The Saints are idle until April 21 when they travel to Berea, Kentucky to play Berea College at 5 p.m.
