The Thomas More College softball team remained undefeated in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) as it shutout Chatham University twice today (Tuesday, April 18, 2017) in a PAC doubleheader at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. The Saints won the first game, 8-0, in six innings and the nightcap, 6-0.
With the sweep, the Saints improve to 24-8 overall and 12-0 in the PAC and the Cougars fall to 6-23 overall and 2-10 in the PAC.
In the first game of the day, Thomas More scored one run in the first, two in the second, one in the third, one in the fifth and three in the six and shutout Chatham for the 8-0 “run-rule” win in six innings. Sophomore pitcher Alix DeDreu (Rising Sun, Ind./Rising Sun) earned the win as she pitched six shutout innings and gave up one hit and recorded six strike out.
Thomas More had 13 hits in the game and had three Saints with multiple hits. The Saints were led by junior center fielder Laura Finke (Fort Wright, Ky./Notre Dame Academy), who was three-for-four with a run scored. First-year first baseman Andrea Gahan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-four with a run scored and junior shortstop Dallis Knotts (Florence, Ky./Boone County) was two-for-four with a run scored and two runs batted-in. First-year catcher Kenzie Dickerson (Union, Ky./Ryle) and sophomore left fielder Mary Beth Odom (Taylor Mill, Ky./Dixie Heights) each had a home run in the game.
Thomas More scored five runs in the fourth and added another run in the fifth, while holding Chatham scoreless for the 6-0 victory. Knotts earned the win as she pitched five shutout innings and gave up only one hit, while striking out three Cougars. Sophomore pitcher Hannah Sprague (Bright, Ind./East Central) pitched two shutout innings of relief and didn’t allow a hit, while striking out one.
Junior catcher Bree Appel (Amelia, Ohio/Batavia) led Saints’ offense as she was two-for-three with three RBI. Finke was two-for-four and Gahan was two-for-three with a double and two runs scored.
The Saints are scheduled to return to action on Thursday (April 20) when they host Denison University in a 3:30 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at Thomas More Field.
