24 U of L Student Athletes Qualify For NCAA Track and Field East Preliminaries

Twenty four University of Louisville track and field student-athletes make up 22 total entries for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary Rounds, the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Committee announced on Thursday.

The event runs from May 25-27 at UK’s Outdoor Track and Field Complex in Lexington, Ky. All-session tickets are now on sale and will include admission to all three days of competition (May 25-27). Gates will open at 10:30 AM ET on May 25 and at 1 PM ET on May 26 & 27. Single-session tickets are now on sale. Single-session tickets will be available for each of the three days of competition (May 25-27). Pre-purchased tickets must be exchanged for a wristband at the ticket windows prior to entering the complex each day.

The women’s squad has nine student-athletes competing in 11 events while the men’s squad qualified 14 student-athletes in 10 events. Sophomore Holly Hankenson qualified for the NCAA Championships in the heptathlon. The NCAA Championship will take place June 7-10 in Eugene, Ore.

Two athletes will compete in multiple events for the Cardinals. Emmonnie Henderson will compete in the shot put and the discus while Raven Grant will compete in both the 100 meters and the 200 meters.

Henderson won her third straight ACC Outdoor Championship event title in the shot put as she hurled a throw of 17.57m/57-7 ¾. She set a new school record in the shot put at the Louisville Invitational with a toss of 17.98/59-0. She also finished fourth in the discus at the ACC Championships with a mark of 51.26/168-2.

In addition to Henderson, Dolly Nyemah and Cyerra Cassell will compete in the hammer throw. Nyemah finished fourth at the ACC Championship in the hammer throw with a personal best mark of 61.99m/203-4. Cassell is making her first NCAA appearance after finishing sixth in the hammer throw at the ACC Championships. She threw a personal best of 57.96m/190-2 in the hammer at the Louisville Invitational.
On the men’s side, Trevor Troutman, Christian Buckley and John Kolb. Troutman will be making his first NCAA Outdoor appearance in the hammer throw. He threw a personal best of 63.14m/207-2 at the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational. Buckley is also making his first NCAA appearance, qualifying in the shot put. The sophomore threw a personal best of 51.75m/169-9 at the Louisville Invitational. Kolb qualified in the discus throw after finishing sixth at the ACC Championships, earning All-ACC honors. The freshman threw a personal best of 54.09m/177-5 at the Tennessee Rust Buster in March.

Edwin Kibichiy won his fourth conference title in the 3,000 meter steeplechase last weekend at the ACC Championships with a time of 8:45.70. He finished third at the Payton Jordan Invitational with a season best time of 8:42.30. Calvin Chemoiywo is making his second straight NCAA appearance, competing in the 10,000 meters. He ran a personal best time of 29:20.17 at the Raleigh Relays. On the women’s side, senior Claire Noser is making her first NCAA Outdoor appearance. Noser will compete in the 3,000 meter steeplechase after finishing fifth at the ACC Championships with a personal best time of 10:15.98.

Also on the track, Grant will represent the Cardinals in the 100 meters and the 200 meters. Grant earned second team All-ACC honors in the 100 and 200 meters last weekend. She ran a personal best time of 23.54 in the preliminary round of the 200 meters. She ran a season best time of 11.56 in the 100 meter final. Senior Gwen Shaw is making her first NCAA appearance in the 400 meter hurdles. Shaw ran a personal best of 59.58 at the Louisville Invitational. On the men’s side, sophomore Martice Moore qualified in the 400 meter hurdles. Moore, an All-ACC selection, finished with a personal best time of 51.26 at the Louisville Invitational. For the second straight year, the men’s 4×400 meter relay team will be making an NCAA Preliminary round appearance. The men’s relay team of Carlos Coleman, Jerin Allen, Tegue Peck and Moore finished with a season best time of 3:08.60 in the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational.

Morgan Zacharias will compete in the pole vault for the second straight season. Zacharias recorded a personal best mark of 4.13/13-6.5 at the Lenny Lyles Clark Wood Invitational. Eric Fox will also compete in the pole vault. The junior set a school record in the pole vault at the Texas Relays with a clearance of 5.10m/16-8.75.

The Cardinals have five athletes competing in the jumping events. Two athletes will compete in the high jump while three will compete in the long jump. Javen Reeves is making his second NCAA Outdoor appearance in the high jump while newcomer Jerin Allen will be making his first. Reeves earned first team All-ACC honors last weekend, finishing third in the event with a season best mark of 2.15m/7-0.5. Allen is the ACC high jump champion after winning a jump off last weekend. Allen also finished with a season best mark of 2.15m/7-0.5 at the ACC Championships.

Bre’Yana Wash will be making her second appearance for the Cardinals in the long jump. The senior won her first ACC title in the event last weekend, finishing with a jump of 6.23m/20-5.25 for the win. Freshman Alexis Gibbons will be making her first NCAA appearance in the long jump. She has a season best jump of 6.18m/20-3.5 at the Tennessee Rust Buster. On the men’s side, Oliver Newport will be making his second appearance for the Cardinals in the long jump. He finished with a season best mark of 7.60m/24-11.25 at the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational.
