The University of Louisville track and field team had two athletes advance to the NCAA Championships on Saturday at the NCAA East Preliminary held at the Kentucky Track and Field Complex. Emmonnie Henderson and Jerin Allen punched their tickets to the NCAA Championship in the shot put and high jump, respectively. The Cardinals will have six athletes compete in seven events at the NCAA Championships.

“We were able to pick up two additional qualifiers to Eugene today with Emmonnie Henderson in the shotput and Jerin Allen in the high jump,” said head coach Dale Cowper. “Emmonnie was in a terrific rhythm today and is certainly in position to contend for a podium position in Eugene in two weeks. She has done a great job of developing through the outdoor season but there certainly still more in the tank.”

Despite several rain delays, Henderson stayed focused and finished second in the women’s shot put. She finished the day with a mark of 17.93m (58-10). The senior will be making her third straight appearance to the NCAA Championships in the shot put. She will also compete in the discus.

“This will be Jerin’s first trip to the national finals and we’re excited to see what he can do,” said Cowper. “He did a great job of working through several weather delays throughout the high jump competition.”

The men’s high jump also had several rain delays. Allen finished 10th on the day, clearing 2.10m (6-10¾). Allen will be making his first appearance to the NCAA championships. Junior Javen Reeves also cleared 2.10m (6-10¾), finishing 19th.

The men’s 4×400 meter relay team of Carlos Coleman, Teague Peck, Josh Hall, and Martice Moore finished 19th with a time of 3:08.73. The time was the second best mark of the season. Freshman John Kolb finished 36th in the men’s discus with a throw of 52.04m (170-9).

The Cardinals will have a week to prepare for the 2017 NCAA Championships on June 7-10 in Eugene, Oregon.
