Eastern Kentucky University’s baseball team was one of only 36 NCAA Division I programs, and the only Ohio Valley Conference team, to receive a 2016-17 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award, the organization announced last week.
The ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award began last year and EKU has earned the honor each year.
Over 215 high school and college programs were recognized with the award, but just 36 NCAA Division I teams met the academic requirements. Eastern joined Louisville as the only two Division I teams in the Commonwealth of Kentucky to be honored.
In order to qualify for the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award, programs must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale during the 2016-17 academic year.
The Colonels had a 3.17 team GPA.
Earlier this summer, Ben Fisher was named the Academic All-America® of the Year for Division I baseball by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Fisher is the first EKU student-athlete selected as the Academic All-America® of the Year for any sport and only the third Ohio Valley Conference student-athlete to receive the honor.
