Former University of Louisville standout Matt Hughes finished sixth in the men’s 3000 meter steeplechase on Tuesday evening at the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London, England.

Hughes finished with a season best time of 8:21.84. He stayed to the back of the field until the final three laps when he made his move, which paid off with a sixth place finish. Kenya’s Conseslus Kipruto won the event with a time of 8:14.12.

Hughes has battled back this year and fought through adversity after a training injury. He finishes the World Championships with back-to-back season best performances. He automatically qualified for the men’s final by placing third in his heat with a then-seasonal best performance of 8:24.79.
