The University of Louisville field hockey team was picked to finish fourth in the ACC according to a vote of the league’s seven head coaches. The Cardinals led the conference with three players selected to the Preseason All-ACC team with senior Nicole Woods, junior Ayeisha McFerran and sophomore Minout Mink earning the honor.

North Carolina was picked to win the conference and received 31 points with one first place vote. Duke and Syracuse tied for second with 27 points apiece with each receiving one first place vote. Louisville also garnered one first place vote and placed fourth with 22 points. Virginia (21 points), Wake Forest (12 points) and Boston College (7 points) round out the preseason poll.

Woods (Beverly, Mass.) picks up her second straight ACC preseason accolade. The three-year starter is a two-time All-ACC and NFHCA All-Region pick and is a member of USA Field Hockey’s National Team. McFerran (Larne, Northern Ireland) is also making her second appearance on the ACC Preseason Team. The two-time All-America selection and member of the Irish National Team led the league with six shutouts and stood second with a 1.27 goals-against average. Mink (Haaksbergen, Netherlands) earned NFHCA All-West region honors after leading the Cards with 15 goals and 33 points in 2016

The Cardinals are coming off of a successful 2016 campaign in which they earned their third straight NCAA appearance and finished the season with a 15-6 overall record – the second most wins in program history. After spending the entire regular season ranked among the top 10 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association(NFHCA) coaches poll, reaching as high as No. 6, Louisville finished the year ranked ninth. The Cards return 14 letterwinners and six starters from last year’s squad and welcome 10 newcomers.

ACC teams have won 18 of the 36 NCAA field hockey titles, including 11 of the last 15, and at least one ACC squad has advanced to the national championship game for 18 straight years. Six ACC programs earned bids to the 2016 NCAA Championship and all seven finished the 2016 season ranked nationally.

2017 ACC Field Hockey Championship will be held Nov. 2-5 at Louisville’s Trager Stadium.

The Cardinals will open the 2017 season on Aug. 25 at 2 p.m. when they play host to Indiana in the ‘Battle of the Border.’ Defending national champion Delaware will visit Trager Stadium for a 12 p.m. matchup.
