University of Louisville swimmers Mallory Comerford, Zach Harting, Kelsi Worrell and Andrea Cottrell are four of the 115 members of the 2017-18 USA National Team, which honors the nation’s top swimmers for their performances this year. In addition, the USA Coaching Staff was announced with UofL’s Arthur Albiero, Stephanie Juncker and Vlad Polyakov joining the team.
The USA Swimming National Team roster is comprised of the top six swimmers in each individual Olympic event.
“USA Swimming enjoyed outstanding performances across the board this summer at the FINA World Championships, World University Games and domestically,” said Frank Busch, USA Swimming National Team Director. “It was a tremendous first year of the Olympic quad for Team USA swimmers, and these athletes will look to build on these successes as they approach the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.”
The United States won a record 38 medals in the pool competition – and added three more medals open water events – at the 2017 FINA World Championships in Hungary. Just last week, American athletes earned 28 medals at the World University Games in Taipei and 32 medals at the FINA World Junior Championships in Indianapolis.
The 2017-18 USA Swimming National Team By the Numbers:
• 115 National Team members (59 men; 56 women)
• 29 states represented; California leads the way with 17 National Team members
• 60-plus USA Swimming clubs represented
• 38 medalists from the 2017 FINA World Championships
• 18 swimmers qualified for the National Team in three-plus events
The 2017-18 USA Swimming National Team features the top six athletes in each individual Olympic event from the combined results of the 2017 Phillips 66 National Championships, 2017 FINA World Championships, 2017 World University Games and the 2017 U.S. Open.
