The Murray State men’s golf squad had a spot in seventh place and Gabe Wheeler was in eighth place after the first two rounds of the Derek Dolenc Invitational at Gateway National Golf Links, Madison, Ill.

The Racers carded team scores of 300 in the morning round and improved by seven shots in the afternoon round with a 293. Their 593 was good for a spot in seventh place in the field of 17 teams. The Racers were six shots off fifth place that was shared by Creighton and Iowa Western each at 587.

Wheeler was in eighth place in the field of 85 players with scores of 68-73 for a 1-under 141. Other MSU scores included Austin Knight with a spot in 37th place after rounds of 75-75=150 and Avery Edwards in 56th place on scores of 77-75=152. Freshman Connor Coombs and Quinn Eaton are making their first starts for the

Racers and had spots in 68th and 72nd place. Coombs had rounds of 80-75=155 and Eaton 81-70=151.

Freshman Rhett Cardwell is playing the event as an individual and was in 51st place on rounds of 73-79=152.
Host SIUE was the leader at 553, with Bradley (566), UT Martin (569) and Missouri State 580 making up the top-5.

The Gateway National course is playing to a par-71 and 7,092 yards.
