Northern Kentucky’s women’s tennis sophomore Margita Sunjic will head to Malibu, Calif., for the Oracle ITA Masters on Sept. 21-24 after being selected to the tournament draw following a spectacular freshman campaign in 2017. Sunjic is one of 32 collegiate women’s tennis players invited to compete in the prestigious tournament.
Sunjic was named the Horizon League Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year following an 8-1 debut League season in 2017. She became NKU’s first Player of the Year in the Division I era and just the second all-time, following in the footsteps of four-time Great Lakes Valley Conference POY Jamie O’Hara, who held the highest honor in the GLVC from 1998-2001. The Croatian native strung together a nine-match winning streak leading up to the final match of the season, all of which were won in straight sets. Sunjic also competed in NKU’s top doubles pairing with since-graduated Klara Skopac, going 7-5 with her compatriot.
Sunjic will play the first round against No. 57 Kaitlyn McCarthy of Duke, who received the No. 4 seed in the tournament field. The junior went 29-5 last season, including 14-0 in ACC matches with time split between the No. 3 and 4 courts. Sunjic will also participate in the mixed doubles draw, teamed up with Simon Freund of UC Santa Barbara. The duo will take on Jessica Failla of Pepperdine and Benjamin Hannestad of Arizona State.
The first round of women’s singles will begin following the first round of mixed doubles, which is scheduled for an 8 a.m. PT start.
The singles champion will earn automatic entry into the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which will be held Nov. 1-5 in Palm Desert, Calif., and replaces the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
