The No. 18th-ranked Thomas More College football team suffered its first loss of the season today (Saturday, September 9, 2017) to Bridgewater (Va.) College, 25-23, in a non-conference game at BB&T Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 1-1 and with the win, the Eagles improve to 2-0.

Bridgewater led 15-0 after one quarter, 18-14 at halftime and 25-14 after three quarters.

The Eagles built a 15-0 lead with 1:01 to play in the first quarter as they scored two touchdowns and added a point-after-attempt along with a two-point conversion.  Thomas More cut the lead to 15-7 with 9:38 to play in the second quarter when junior running back Hjavier Pitts (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mt. Healthy)scored on a 73-yard run and sophomore kicker Cole Mathias (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) added the PAT.

Bridgewater extended the lead to 18-7 when the Eagles made a 26-yard field goal with 4:37 to play in the second quarter.  The Saints cut the lead to 18-14 at halftime when senior quarterback Brenan Kuntz (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) connected on a 19-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Daylin Garland II (Newport, Ky./Newport) and Mathias added the PAT with 1:46 to play in the second quarter.

The Eagles added a touchdown and a PAT with 1:37 to play in the third quarter to extend the lead to 24-14.  Junior running back Luke Zajac (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) scored on a one-yard turn and the two-point try failed and the Saints cut the lead to 25-20 with 12:17 to play in the fourth quarter.  Mathias connected on a 23-yard field goal with 5:54 to play in the game to cut the lead to 25-23.  After stopping Bridgewater the Saints march down and with one-second to play in the game Mathias attempted a 52-yard field goal, which fell two-yard short.

Thomas More had 426 yards of total offense (248 rushing/178 passing).

Pitts carried the ball 17 times for 160 yards and one touchdown, while Kuntz was 16-of-35 passing for 178 yards and one touchdown and had 11 rushes for 65 yards.  Junior wide receiver Logan Winkler (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) led the receiving corps with five catches for 65 yards and Garland had four catches for 46 yards and one touchdown.

Junior defensive lineman Cam Hansel (Covington, Ky./Simon Kenton) led the defense with 13 tackles (six solo/seven assisted), including one sack and one and a half tackles for a loss.  Senior defensive back Johnny Lammers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) had 11 tackles (seven solo/four assisted), including a half tackle for a loss.  Sophomore linebacker Adam Guard (Lawrenceburg, Ind./Pinecrest Academy (Ga.)) had seven tackles (five solo/two assisted), including a half tackle for a loss and one forced fumble and sophomore defensive lineman Jacob Steinmetz (St. Leon, Ind./East Central) had seven tackles (one solo/six assisted), including a half sack and tackle for a loss.

The Saints open Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) play next Saturday (September 16) when they travel to Washington, Pennsylvania to play Washington & Jefferson.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Cameron Stadium.
