Kentucky junior guard Dillon Pulliam and senior post Alyssa Rice were selected as one of 28 men’s and women’s basketball representatives for the 2017-18 Southeastern Conference Leadership Council. The council is comprised of one male and one female basketball player from each one of the 14 member SEC institutions.
The 28 players are slated to meet at the SEC Headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama, Sept. 15-16.
Among the agenda items for the group is a conversation with Commissioner Greg Sankey followed by a review of NCAA and SEC legislative items related to basketball. The student-athletes will also have an opportunity to engage with men’s and women’s basketball officials on rules of the game and student-athlete/referee interaction.
The men’s representatives will hear from former ESPN College Basketball analyst Andy Katz on the topics of careers in broadcasting and personal and professional image and branding. The women’s representatives will hear from Renee Brown, former WNBA Chief of Basketball Operations and Player Relations, to discuss careers in professional sports and WNBA preparedness.
Pulliam is a two-time All-SEC Academic team member. He appeared in six games a season ago, logging an assist and a rebound in a win over Duquesne. Pulliam, a Cynthiana, Kentucky, native transferred to Kentucky after a successful season at Transylvania University where he played in 25 games and averaged 4.8 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.
A native of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Rice has played in 93 career games with 43 starts entering her senior year as a Wildcat. A three-year member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, Rice played in 33 games with 30 starts as a junior, averaging 21.8 minutes per game, 4.2 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per game. She also finished second on the team with 22 blocks last season. Rice was named to the SEC Community Service Team last season and earlier this year traveled with several other UK athletes on a service trip to Panama.
The Men’s Basketball Leadership Council and the Women’s Basketball Leadership Council comprise two components of the SEC Student-Athlete Leadership Council. The third component is the Football Leadership Council. For the second consecutive year, the groups will gather in Atlanta the week of the SEC Football Championship Game in December for a career exploration tour.
