The Murray State men’s golf squad brought home a ninth place finish at the Derek Dolenc Invitational at Gateway National Golf Links, Madison, Ill.
The Racers carded scores of 300-293-303=896 in the 54-hole event and finished four shots behind seventh place Drake (892) and three shots ahead of 10th place Valparaiso (899).
Gabe Wheeler led the Racers with a spot in 13th place on scores of 68-73-74=215. His first round 3-under par 68 represented his career-low round at Murray State, topping the 69 he shot during the fall of his 2015 freshman season at the APSU Intercollegiate at the Links of Novadel in Hopkinsville, Ky.
MSU’s leading scorer in the first two events of the season, Avery Edwards, placed 28th this time in the field of 85 players on scores of 77-75-70=222. MSU’s freshman pair of Connor Coombs and Quinn Eaton made their first Racer starts this week and finished 65th and 69th respectively. Coombs had scores of 80-75-77=232, while Eaton posted scores of 81-70-82=233. Austin Knight had scores of 75-75 in day one, before having to withdraw in round three.
MSU freshman Rhett Cardwell played the event as an individual and placed 74th on scores of 72-79-82=234.
Host SIUE was the winner with a total score of 841, while UT Martin (860), Bradley (861), Missouri State (868) and Iowa Western (872) rounded out the top-5 teams.
The Gateway National course played to a par-71 and 7,092 yards.
The next challenge for the Racers is the UTM Skyhawk Classic (Oct. 2-3) at Paris Landing State Park in Buchanan, Tenn.
