Murray State’s Austin Knight won medalist honors Tuesday with a brilliant 2-under-par final round at the Austin Peay Intercollegiate at GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson, Tennessee.
Knight’s victory came on his best event in the 17 he’s played at MSU as the sophomore from Hopkinsville, Ky., posted scores of 73-67-70=210. Knight scored a one-shot win over Auburn’s Ryan Knop who had scores of 72-67-72=211. Knight becomes the first Racer to win an individual title since Preston French won the Tennessee Tech event in Sevierville in March of 2016. Knight’s second round 5-under-par 67 was his lowest round as a Racer in relation to par.
MSU’s Avery Edwards gave the Racers a pair of players in the top-10 when he had a ninth-place showing on rounds of 69-74-74=217. Lance Davis placed 46th after scores of 77-77-74=217, while Connor Coombs had scores of 85-69-77=231 for a spot in 51st place. Gabe Wheeler was 53rd on scores of 73-79-80=232.
The team finish for the Racers was a heartbreaker when they lost a lead in the final round to Missouri State and UT Martin. MOSU was able to post a 1-under-par 287 and UT Martin a 289 and they each leaped past the Racers. When the clubs were put away, the Racers were third on rounds of 292-287-295=874, while UTM (292-292-289=873) beat Missouri State (291-295-287=873) on the first hole of a team playoff.
The Racers bested five other teams from the Ohio Valley Conference with their third place finish.
The rest of the field included Mercer (881), Austin Peay (882), Samford (890), Tennessee State (894), Belmont (898), Binghamton (900), Tennessee Tech (901) and Eastern Illinois (947).
The course at GreyStone played to a par of 72 and at 7,000 yards. Greystone hosted the OVC men’s championship in four consecutive seasons from 2010-13. The Racers’ last OVC title was there in 2010.
The Racers have one event remaining in their fall season. They’ll travel to Birmingham, Alabama (Oct. 23-24) for the Samford Invitational at Greystone Golf & Country Club.
