The University of Louisville men’s tennis team turned in a strong performance with eight wins on the opening day the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Ohio Valley Regionals Thursday at the University of Tennessee’s Goodfriend Tennis Center.

“It was a really nice first day for us in singles winning seven of eight matches,” said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. “Coaches Gustafsson and Weant did a good job today as well. Our focus the last two weeks has been singles. We were 17-2 last weekend in singles at the Louisville Fall Invitational. George and Federico continue to play well as they upset the No. 5 seed from MTSU in doubles.”

The day started with a round of doubles which saw the Louisville’s first win of tournament as the duo of juniors George Hedley and Federico Gomez edged Middle Tennessee’s fifth-seeded pair of Tom Moonen and Gonzalo Morell 8-7(8).

The Cardinals went on to register seven singles wins. Seniors Nicolas Rouanet and Ciro Lampasas, juniors Brandon Lancaster, Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and sophomores Clement Filho and Parker Wynn each posted straight set wins while Gomez rebounded from a first set loss to take his next two sets.

The tournament will resume Friday with a round of doubles and two rounds of singles in the main draw and one in the consolation draw.
