The Thomas More College men’s golf team opened its Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) title defense today (Monday, October 2, 2017) and shot a first round 305 and leads the PAC Championship Tournament at Avalon at Squaw Creek in Vienna, Ohio.
The 2017-18 PAC Championships is a 54-hole stroke play event, with 36 holes played at the Fall Championships and another 18 holes played at the Spring Championships in April. The combined 54-hole team total will determine the 2017-18 PAC team champions and winners of the league’s men’s automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Division III Championships.
The Saints lead Washington & Jefferson College by two strokes and Grove City College by seven strokes after the first round.
Senior Carter Hibbard (Florence, Ky./Boone County) leads the Saints as he is tied for second place with a 74. Two other Saints are in the Top-10 as sophomore Kyle Alexander (Taylorsville, Ky./Spencer County) is tied for fourth with a 75 and junior Matt Striegel (Cold Springs, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) is tied for sixth with a 76.
Rounding out Thomas More’s golfers were sophomore Jacob Zai (Cold Springs, Ky./Bishop Brossart), who is tied for 16th with an 80 and sophomore Zack Baynum (California, Ky./Campbell County), who is in 19th place with an 81.
Thiel College’s JasonThorp leads the individual standings with a 73.
The second round gets underway tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. at Avalon at Squaw Creek.
