The Thomas More College women’s basketball team is ranked No. 5 in the Preseason Poll, which was released last night.

The Saints return four starters from last year’s squad that was 28-1, including an 18-0 record in the PAC and entered the NCAA Division III Championship ranked No. 2 in the country. Thomas More fell to Hope College in the second round of the tournament. The team had a +33.4 scoring margin last year as it scored 85.9 points per game and held opponents to 52.4 points per game. The Saints had a +8.5 turnover margin and a 1.8 assist turnover ratio, while shooting 47.8 percent from the field.

Thomas More coached by seventh-year Head Coach Jeff Hans returns four of five starters as senior guard Abby Owings (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton), senior forward Nikki Kiernan (Cold Springs, Ky./Newport Central Catholic), junior guards Madison Temple (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) and Michaela Ware (Newport, Ky./Newport Central Catholic). The Saints also return sophomore forward Emily Schultz (Melbourne, Ky./Bishop Brossart), junior forward Shelby Rupp (Milan, Ind./Batesville), sophomore guard Taylor Jolly (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County), sophomore guard Kaela Saner (Florence, Ky./Boone County) and junior guard Kelly Clapper (Newark, Ohio/Newark Catholic), who saw playing time last season off the bench.

The Saints open the season on November 17 and 18 when they travel to Rochester, New York to play in the Rochester University Chuck Resler Tip-Off Tournament. Thomas More will Calvin College on the first day and either Capital University or No. 21-ranked Rochester on the second day. Thomas More’s home opener will be on November 25 when it hosts Heidelberg University at 4 p.m. on the first day of the Julie Costello Memorial Classic presented by Barleycorn’s and sponsored by Holiday Inn Cincinnati Airport.
