Northern Kentucky women’s soccer student-athletes Jessica Frey and Samantha Duwel were named to the Horizon League All-Tournament team, as announced by the organization late Saturday night. The Norse fell to IUPUI in the semifinals of the Horizon League Tournament in Milwaukee by a score of 3-2.
“Our team played at a championship level on Thursday, and we were peaking at the right time,” said NKU head coach Bob Sheehan. “Soccer can be a cruel game, but I am so proud of the substantial growth and development that our team demonstrated as we moved through the season.”
Frey scored 11 goals this season, which ranked first on the team. She was named to the Horizon League First Team and All-Academic team for the third year in a row. Frey was also one of 30 candidates for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award.
“Jess showed up for every single training session and every match focused and ready to compete,” stated Sheehan. “She played at a consistently high level and has been a huge part of this program for the past four years. Jess had an incredible senior year. Congratulations to Jess on earning a spot on the Horizon League All-Tournament team.”
Duwel scored three goals this season, including one in the semifinal match against IUPUI on Thursday. She also contributed two assists on the year for the Norse.
“Sam missed the first part of the season and overcame significant obstacles this year,” said Sheehan. “When Sam returned to play, she became an impact player due to her work ethic, passion, and skill level. Congratulations to Sam on earning a spot on the Horizon League All-Tournament team.”
