Laura Argente extended her winning streak to five after taking down Milana Lysova at No. 2 singles as the Eastern Kentucky University women’s tennis team routed the Mid-Atlantic Conference’s Preseason No. 2 team, Miami (Ohio), 4-3.
Putri Dwinta defeated the Redhawks (2-5) in set one, 6-2. The senior played level-headed in set two with the clinch on the line and won the match, 6-4.
“I’m really proud of the way our girls competed against a very good tennis team today,” Head Coach Rob Oertel stated. “Miami is consistently a top three finisher in the MAC. Laura is on an amazing run, she was a great No. 1 for us two years ago and is reaching that form again. Putri had great scores today and handled the pressure of having to clinch very well. I hope we can build on this victory today, we have a lot of good teams coming up.”
Alexandra Belle was first off the court after making quick work of Emily Struble, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 4 singles to even the score at 1-1. Struble boasted a 21-3 dual match singles record and was undefeated in MAC play in 2017 to lead the Redhawks.
Viktorija Demcenkova claimed the win at No. 3 singles, topping Priyana Kalita, 6-4, 7-5. The point put the Colonels (4-2) up, 2-1.
Miami took the match at No. 1 to again tie the score, 2-2.
Argente took set one over Lysova, 6-2, but the Redhawk came thundering back to swipe the second, 6-3. The two engaged in a chess match of a third set, but after a well-placed shot from the Castellon, Spain native Miami crumbled, 6-1.
Eastern Kentucky will be back in action on Saturday as they welcome in the University of Cincinnati at 4 p.m.
