UK MTEN to Host Chattanooga, IUPUI on Friday

The Kentucky men’s tennis team will continue nonconference play this weekend when UK welcomes Chattanooga and IUPUI for a Friday doubleheader. The Wildcats will face the Mocs at 10 a.m. on Friday while Jaguars will come to Boone Tennis Center at 3 p.m.

UK will hit the road on Sunday to face Virginia. First serve in Charlottesville, Va. is set for noon at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.

The Wildcats are coming off a 4-1 win over Wisconsin last weekend in the consolation round of the ITA Kick-off. Will Bushamuka earned his first singles win of the year as the Wildcats dominated singles play over the Badgers. UK fell in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off to Oklahoma State, 4-2, in the first round of competition.

Chattanooga is 2-3 this season with wins over Lee University and Austin Peay. The Mocs have also faced Middle Tennessee State, Alabama and Abilene Christian this season. Chattanooga’s No. 1 player, Niklas Gerdes, earned singles wins in each of their victories this season. UTC has earned the doubles point once this season, against Lee.

IUPUI is 2-2 this season with wins over Belmont and Eastern Illinois. The Jags have also faced Michigan State and Dayton earlier this season. IUPUI’s last match was against Belmont, where they earned a 5-2 victory. Bradley Leutschweiger improved to 4-0 this season as the No. 4 singles player. IUPUI earned the doubles point in that victory.

Virginia is 2-2 this season and has taken down Richmond and Temple. The Cavaliers are receiving votes in the latest ITA coaches poll. UVA hosted the ITA Kick-off weekend last week and fell to Texas Tech, 4-3, in the first round and Ole Miss, 4-1, in the consolation match. The Cavaliers will take on Eastern Kentucky the day before facing UK.

Kentucky will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 11 when UK heads to Duke. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
