The Murray State women’s tennis team completed the week a perfect 3-0 after they defeated Jacksonville State in a close 4-3 win in Jacksonville, Alabama.
With their fifth win in a row, the Racers move to 9-5 overall and 3-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Jacksonville State drops to 10-3 overall and 3-2 in OVC play.
The Racers kicked things off winning doubles 2-0, with Amina Hadzic and Anja Loncarevic winning 6-1 while Stasya Sharapova and Sara Loncarevic won 6-4. Sara Bjork and Jeanne Masson were unable to finish their doubles match.
“It was a huge team win today. We played great in doubles and it was huge to go up 1-0 heading to singles,” said head coach Jorge Caetano after the win.
The Racers and Gamecocks traded blows throughout singles play, as each team went 3-3. All three of Murray State’s victories came in three-set battles.
Stasya Sharapova won in three sets in her first match in the first position. Winning the first set 6-3, Sharapova dropped the second set narrowly 6-7 before rallying and winning the third 6-3.
Amina Hadzic won her 10th straight match, winning in a hard-fought three-set match. Hadzic won 7-5 in the first set before being losing the second set 2-6. She would go on to win 6-4 in the third set.
Anja Loncarevic took her fourth win of the year in a three-set match. Much like the other matches, Loncarevic won her first set 7-5 before losing the second set 5-7. In the third set, Loncarevic won 6-2.
“Jacksonville is a very tough team and coming back from 3-1 down, on the road against them was amazing. The girls did a great job of staying positive, and they kept on fighting when things were not going our way. I’m very proud of every single one of them for getting the job done today.”
Murray State will travel to take on the Skyhawks of UT Martin on Friday, March 30 before closing out the month of March with a trip to Southeast Missouri to face the Redhawks on Saturday, March 31.
