The Murray State softball team exploded for six runs in the fifth inning of Wednesday’s game against Western Kentucky at Racer Field in Murray, Kentucky to rally past the Hilltoppers for a 9-6 win.
Murray State was first on the board in the game when they scored three runs in the opening stanza on a pair of RBI-singles from Sierra Gilmore and Lexi Jones. However, WKU wasted little time cutting into the lead in the second thanks to a two-run shot by Brittany Vaughn.
After a scoreless third by both teams, Vaughn struck again in the fourth with an RBI-double that tied the game at three. The Hilltoppers then took a 6-3 lead later in the inning on a throwing error by the Racers that scored two and a RBI-single from Jordan Thomas.
In the fifth, Murray State loaded the bases with one out on walks from Gilmore and Jones and a single from Madison Culver. Macey Hale and Ellison Barrett then cut the lead to just one at 6-5 with back-to-back bases loaded walks. Jones would then tie the game at six on a single from Brenna Finck followed by a bases-clearing double from Lillie Goetz to give MSU a 9-6 lead. The Racers added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly from Jenny Homann in the sixth to cap the scoring at 10-6 for the victory.
Amber Van Duyse moved to 2-5 on the year with the complete game win allowing four earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Jones finished the game by going 2-for-2 with a run, two RBIs and two walks, while Finck and Gilmore each had two hits, two RBIs, a walk and a run.
Murray State returns to action at Racer Field Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against UT Martin.
