The University of Louisville track and field teams wrapped up day two at the NCAA East Preliminary at the USF Track and Field Stadium on Friday. Freshman Gabriela Leon earned a spot at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, June 6-9. Leon is the third Cardinal to qualify for the finals.
“Gabriela Leon was able to get things off to a great start this morning by punching her ticket into the NCAA Finals and tying our school record in the pole vault,” said Cowper. “She has been able to work through a slight hamstring issue during the outdoor season and really stepped up at the right time today. Leon is going to have a lot of big jumps in her future. It’s exciting to see her continuing to build upon the women’s pole vault reputation that UofL has been developing over the last five years.”
Leon leaped to a personal best 4.18m/13-8½ in the pole vault to finish eighth and earn her ticket to the NCAA Championships. She tied Chanel Krause’s school record set at the 2015 NCAA East Preliminary.
The women’s discus competition was suspended with a weather delay before the third flight. Freshman Makenli Forrest finished 25th with a throw of 49.65m/162-10. Teammate Natalie Uhl ended her career with a mark of 47.14m/154-8 to finish at 34th.
On the track, Donald McClinton ran a personal best of 20.76 in the 200 meters to finish 29th. The mark also breaks his previous school record. Albert Kosgei finished 29th in the men’s 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:08.07. Kelsey Heyward finished 48th in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.78.
“Both squads need to have a big day tomorrow in order to set up opportunities at the NCAA Championships in Eugene,” Cowper said.
The final day of competition begins with the women’s hammer throw on Saturday morning at 8:45 a.m.
