Eastern Kentucky University student-athletes combined for a 3.11 grade-point-average this past semester, the second-highest spring GPA ever. It’s the 13th straight semester that EKU student-athletes have registered a 3.0 or higher combined GPA.

Out of 289 student-athletes, 186 earned a 3.0 or better GPA, the second-most ever during a spring semester. That’s 65 percent with a 3.0 or better GPA. Among that group, 49 Colonels had a perfect 4.0 GPA, the second-most ever in a spring semester.

Thirteen of Eastern’s 15 athletic teams posted a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.

In addition to excelling in the classroom, EKU’s student-athletes combined for a record 2,568.5 hours of community service during the 2017-18 academic year. On the fields and courts, the Colonels claimed four Ohio Valley Conference Championships during the spring 2018 semester, six total during the 2017-18 year and captured a fifth straight OVC Commissioner’s Cup.

“I continue to be amazed with our student-athletes, in the classroom, in the community and in competition,” Director of Athletics Stephen Lochmueller said. “These numbers show what an asset these young women and men are to Eastern Kentucky University.”

Two teams posted their highest GPA’s ever. The men’s basketball team finished with an all-time best 3.16 GPA. The men’s tennis team’s 3.65 GPA was a new high mark for that program. The women’s soccer team combined for a 3.64 GPA, the best-ever during a spring semester and the second-highest overall.

The 3.12 GPA by the baseball team and the 3.37 GPA by the men’s cross country squad were the second-highest spring GPAs recorded by those teams.

“As always, I want to recognize the outstanding work of our staff in the Chad Bratzke Student-Athlete Academic Success Center,” Lochmueller said. “The academic success of the Colonels is a reflection of the dedication and hard work of Monika Banbel and her team.”

The other teams compiling a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA include women’s cross country (3.5), men’s golf (3.43), women’s golf (3.21), softball (3.18), women’s tennis (3.63), men’s indoor/outdoor track (3.0), women’s indoor/outdoor track (3.17) and volleyball (3.44).

The 2.99 combined GPA by Eastern’s male student-athletes is the third-highest for the spring semester ever. EKU’s female student-athletes posted a 3.28 GPA this past fall.
