Sarah Owusu’s golden goal in double overtime lifted the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team to a wild 4-3 win over in-state rival Morehead State on Tuesday afternoon.
EKU (5-5-2, 1-1-2 OVC) led 3-0 with just over 30 minutes to play in the game; however, Morehead State (2-11-0, 1-4-0 OVC) scored three unanswered goals to close out regulation, the equalizer coming with just 40 seconds on the clock to send the game into overtime.
The Colonels responded to the Eagles’ rally, though. Five minutes into double overtime, sophomore Kylie Thompson found Owusu, who buried the game-winner.
Junior Erin Torrence had two goals and one assist on the day for the Colonels.
She found senior Bailly Bounds in the 34th minute, who scored her second goal of the season to give the Colonels an early 1-0 lead.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Torrence received a pass from senior Idalys Rea and finished in front of the goal to make it 2-0, EKU. Eight minutes later, Torrence headed in a cross from senior Monica Rios to give EKU a seemingly comfortable 3-0 advantage in the 54th minute.
Dani Wilson ignited the late MSU rally with a goal in the 60th minute. Less than three minutes later, Nicole Palmer scored to make it 3-2. Wilson then finished off the rally with a goal with less than a minute to play.
“Today was a game of two different halves,” head coach Nick Flohre said. “We were thrilled with how we played in the first half. We moved the ball well, created some really good chances and felt like we had control of the game. Unfortunately, we backed off in the second half and lost our discipline and organization. We have to learn from this game so we don’t make the same mistakes in the future.”
EKU outshot Morehead State, 28-10, on the day. Owusu led the Colonels with five shots. Bounds attempted four.
Defenders Kacy Eckley and Katie Shaffer played all 105 minutes of the hard-fought win.
Freshman goalkeeper Zoe Aguirre made three saves in the victory.
EKU hits the road to Tennessee this weekend to face Austin Peay and Belmont.
