RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University softball team—off to its best start in program history—will host two Ohio Valley Conference double headers this weekend at Gertrude Hood Field.
EKU (18-6, 3-0 OVC) hosts Murray State on Friday and welcomes Austin Peay for a Saturday twin bill. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. both days.
The Colonels have racked up 18 wins and lead the OVC in 14 statistical categories. EKU rolled to a series sweep at Tennessee State last weekend, outscoring the Tigers 32-5 in three games.
EKU enters the weekend atop the league in batting average (.326), slugging percentage (.454), on base percentage (.390), runs (134), hits (211) and doubles (39).
Senior Kayla Joyce leads the OVC, hitting .422 on the season while sophomore Paige Murphy is averaging a league-best .92 runs-per-game.
The fruitful offense accompanies one of the league’s most effective pitching and defensive units. The Colonels’ 2.29 earned run average is the best in the conference. Through its 24 games, EKU has held its opponents to league-low .223 at the plate.
Junior right-hander Alex Sallberg leads the nation in saves. Meanwhile, senior Hayley Flynn ranks 20th in the country in wins. The duo has combined for 152 strikeouts on the season in 143 and two-thirds innings on the mound.
Murray State (10-14, 1-2 OVC) opened league play last weekend, avoiding the sweep at Southeast Missouri State. The Racers lost to 15th ranked Kentucky on Wednesday, 6-1.
Austin Peay (5-15, 1-2 OVC) travels to Richmond after opening conference play at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville last weekend.
