The Bellarmine University men’s tennis team dropped its highly competitive Great Lakes Valley Conference opener with Lewis, 4-5, on Saturday at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex.

The Flyers (9-5, 1-0 GLVC) edged the Knights (5-8, 0-1) by winning two of the three doubles matches and the Nos. 1-3 singles matches.

Virtually every match was hotly contested. At No. 1 doubles, Bellarmine juniors Jose Legarreta and Zachary Kuo pushed region power Alan Braschinsky and Mate Srdanovic to the limit before falling 8-9.

Bellarmine notched a victory at No. 3 doubles when junior Alex Swords and freshman Lauren de Boeck defeated Chandler Stimpert and Anton Levitin 8-4.

That pair was also successful in singles action. Swords rallied from dropping the first set at No. 5 to win a tiebreaker over Stimpert, and de Boeck captured the first set and the tiebreaker at No. 6 over Levitin. In addition, senior Nathan Walroth won in straight sets over Brendan Peterson at No. 4.

Kuo was involved in another close match at No. 2 singles, winning the first set before falling in three.
