The University of Louisville men’s tennis team fell 4-3 to No. 23 Florida State in an ACC matchup at Florida States Scott Speicher Tennis Center.

“We definitely have several good pieces in our lineup. We just needed one more piece today,” said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. “Florida State is one of the best teams in the ACC and they had a nice crowd today supporting them. Chris scored another impressive ACC win at #2. Nunez played #1 against us last season when we lost to them at home. Jeff Brown was very confident today. He loves tie-breakers and won it 7-0. Carlos is more comfortable now and is settling in. We will work tomorrow in practice to get that final piece.”

The Seminoles (15-7, 7-3 ACC) took an early lead with wins on doubles courts 1 and 2. Louisville’s senior duo of Jeffrey Brown and Alex Gornet fell 6-1 to No. 19 Benjamin Lock and Marco Nunez 6-1 at No. 1. Freshmen George Hedley and Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff fell 6-2 to Aziz Dougaz and Michael Rinaldi at the two-spot to put Florida State up 1-0. On court three, junior Sean Sean Donohue and sophomore Courtney Lock and the Seminoles’ Jose Gracia and Terrance Whitehurst were tied 4-4 when the point was decided.

In singles, FSU took a 2-0 lead on court one where Benjamin Lock, No. 10 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings, defeated Gornet 6-0, 6-1. Dougaz defeated Hedley 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 to put the Seminoles up 3-0. The match was decided on court five where Gracia topped freshman Brandon Lancaster 6-3, 6-2.

The Cards got on the scoreboard on court six where freshman Carlos Longhi Neto defeated Jake Albo 6-3, 6-2. Brown picked up a 6-4, 7-6 (7-0) win over Rinaldi at No. 3 and Morin-Kougoucheff wrapped up the match with a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) decision against No. 74 Marco Nunez for the 4-3 final.

Louisville (12-14, 0-9 ACC) will continue its weekend road swing with another ACC match against No. 75 Miami on Sunday. The match will be shown on ESPN3.
