Bellarmine University women’s tennis junior Mairin Cotter captured the B Flight consolation title, freshman Jennifer Skonieczny advanced to the A Flight consolation finals and two Knights doubles teams reached the B Flight semifinals at the ITA Midwest Regional hosted by Grand Valley State.
After falling in a tiebreaker in her B Flight singles match, Cotter moved to the consolation bracket and pushed to four straight wins. She won the first three in straight sets without dropping more than three games in any frame, including her quarterfinal and semifinal tilt. Cotter met Indianapolis’ Paige Olsen in the finals and rallied to win a thriller, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 1-0 (10-2).
Skonieczny nearly duplicated Cotter’s feat in the A Flight consolation bracket. She advanced to the quarterfinals by winning a super tiebreaker and then moved to the semifinals after taking another nailbiter, 6-4, 7-6 (11-9), over Tiffin’s Emily Sim. Skonieczny advanced by a Drury default into the finals before falling 2-6, 2-6 to Walsh’s Sofya Logunova.
Cotter and junior Marissa Kovach advanced to the B Flight doubles semifinals with a victory, while senior Sydney Thompson and Skonieczny also secured a berth in the semifinals after notching two wins. Thompson collected two victories in B Flight singles play, and Kovach earned one win.
Sophomore Maggie Walroth and freshman Ashley Jonathan both secured a win in A Flight singles action. The duo advanced to the A Flight doubles quarterfinals after winning two matches.
