Megan Clarke helped the WKU Lady Topper Golf Team accomplish some history Tuesday.
The sophomore seized the individual title at the Little Rock Golf Classic, earning the victory by two strokes with a 4-under 212 (72-67-73) tally.
This is the first time in program history that multiple golfers have won tournaments in the same season. Junior Mary Joiner won the first two events of the fall.
This is also Clarke’s first career victory. Her previous best finish was a tie for 11th at the 2018 Conference USA Championship.
“I really enjoyed the tournament, and I’m so happy to get my first college win,” Clarke said. “After not playing my best in a couple tournaments, my game feels good and I played solid all week. I’m really proud of the team and can’t wait for the spring semester.”
Clarke came into Tuesday’s final round at the par-72, 6,076-yard Diamante Country Club in second place, one shot behind Missouri State’s Rachel Johnson.
Johnson shot a 4-over 76 on the final day, while Clarke’s 1-over 73 was good enough to notch the win. The Heckmondwike, England, native led the tournament field in total birdies (12) and par-5 scoring (7 under).
The Lady Toppers started the day tied for the team lead, but the team’s No. 1 golfer Joiner was forced to withdraw before the final round due to illness she’d fought throughout the event.
WKU ultimately finished fourth at 904 (308-289-307), seven strokes behind champion Central Arkansas.
Junior Bailey Tyree tied for 23rd with a three-round total of 229 (81-72-76), while junior Abigail Smee tied for 44th at 234 (80-79-75). Freshman Lizzie Loy totaled a 238 (78-77-83) sum.
This is the final event of a successful fall campaign for the WKU.
The Lady Toppers earned three top-five team finishes, including a victory at the Boston College Intercollegiate, and took the individual title in 3 of 5 events. The team also recorded 11 top-25 individual finishes throughout the semester.
“I’m so proud of Megan to get her first win in the last event of the season,” WKU head coach Adam Gary said. “She played some incredibly steady golf this week. It was unfortunate for the team that Mary was sick, but some things are out of your control. All in all, we had a good fall season and look forward to progressing this winter to be ready for the spring.”
WKU returns to action in the spring at Jacksonville’s Amelia Island Collegiate on Feb. 18-19 in Fernandina Beach, Fla.
