The Murray State women’s golf team is the leader after the first 18 holes of the Chris Banister Golf Classic
At Silver Lakes Golg Course in Glencoe, Alabama.
The Racers carded a team 287 in round one as they set the single-round scoring record in the 23 years of the event. MSU was a shot better than the 288 accomplished twice by Chattanooga in 2007 and 2008.
Murray State’s Lucila Puente Rodriguez de Austria was in first place after she fired a 5-under-par 67 in her round which was the tournament record. Her 67 surpassed the 69 posted four times, the last in 2009 by Angela Drane of Louisiana-Monroe. The round was also a career-low at MSU for the sophomore Rodriguez.
The Racers’ 287 gave them a seven-shot lead on Tennessee Tech and Alabama State, each at 304. Host Jacksonville State and Limestone College shared fourth place at 305.
Other MSU scores included a career-low tying round of 2-under-par 70 for Jane Watts, which was good for a spot in fourth place in the field of 49 players. Linette Holmslykke had a spot in seventh place after a 74. Moa Folke and Raeysha Surendran each shot a 76 and were in 12th place.
MSU’s Anna Moore and Belen Amoros Benet are playing the event as individuals. Moore’s 75 had her in 10th place and Benet’s 77 was good for a spot in 17th place.
