Greensburg– Taylor County defeated Bardstown 58-39 in Wednesday night’s 5th region title game that featured Mr. Basketball candidate Eljay Cowherd and highly recruited prospect Quentin Goodin.The matchup featured top 10 Taylor County and defending title champs Bardstown. The game was one for the history books and many Packed the gym to witness two teams undefeated in regional play.
The Cardinals led the whole game and pulled away in the fourth quarter. Every time Bardstown clawed closer the Cardinals answered back with a big bucket. Hot shooting, defense and free throws down the stretch contributed to Taylor County’s win and its first regional title in 32 years.
Taylor County’s star player Quentin Goodin was whistled for 2 ticky tack fouls in the first 15 seconds of the game and set the pine until the second half. Coach Gatewood and the Cardinals never blinked as Brandon Berry (14 pts 8 boards),Cameron Morgeson(11pts), and David Sloan (8 pts) stepped up in Goodin’s absence with great defense, especially on Mr. Basketball candidate, Eljay Cowherd(9pts). The Cardinals controlled the matchup with hot shooting.(55% total FG, 50% 3 point FG).
Bardstown’s poor shooting(34%) didn’t allow the Tigers to utilize the full court press and only forced Taylor County this o 7 turnovers.
Today the Cardinals have high heads after defeating the defending regional champions, going undefeated in regional play, and headed to state.
The Cardinals head to Rupp Arena Tuesday and face the winner of region 2 in the first round matchup of the KHSAA Boy’s Sweet 16 which will be determination ned tomorrow night between Hopkinsville and Webster County.
