SAN DIEGO, Calif. – No. 22 Kentucky women’s tennis ends a successful trip to the Golden State with a clinch victory over the University of San Diego, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats advance to 3-1 on the season, while the Toreros fall to 2-1.
The Wildcats secured the first point of the match with a sweep of doubles action. Moving into the No. 1 spot for the match, Morgan Chumney and Akvilė Paražinskaitė blanked USD’s Drew Spinosa and Dana Oppinger, 6-0. From there, the No. 3 pairing of Justina Mikulskytė and Nadia Ravita handed Colomba DiFilippo and Maria-Paula Torres a 6-4 loss. In No. 2 singles, Aldila Sutjiadi paired up with Kirsten Lewis, taking down Shani Blecher and Marta Stojanovic in a 6-3 decision.
Ravita was the first to complete singles play in the No. 3 spot, handily defeating Sophia Chow in 6-0, 6-2 sets. No. 97 Sutjiadi took the first set against Stojanovic in No. 1 singles in a smooth 6-1 victory, but was pushed to extra games in the second before pulling away with a 7-5 set to clinch the win.
UK saw its first loss of the match come in No. 5 singles, when Blecher took down Paražinskaitė, 6-3, 7-6(0). But the Blue and White would clinch the victory with Mikulskytė earning the fourth point for Kentucky with a 7-6(5), 7-6(4) battle with Spinosa in the No. 2 singles spot.
Before their matches were abandoned, Chumney was tied at 1-1 in the third set against Oppinger after winning the first set, 6-4, and dropping a 3-6 second set, while Lewis was at 2-3 in the third after a 6-1 victory in the first and a 5-7 setback in the second to DiFilippo in No. 6 singles.
Kentucky will continue its road swing in its next outing, traveling to Champaign, Ill., for a matchup against No. 53 Illinois. The Wildcats will take on the Fighting Illini on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. ET.
