UKTF’s Beckie Famurewa wins NACAC U23 Championships Hammer Throw

Senior Beckie Famurewa continued Kentucky’s string strong results in this summer of international track and field competition, winning the North American, Central American, and Caribbean Athletics Association (NACAC) Under-23 Championship in the hammer throw on Friday.
Famurewa, who completed her NCAA eligibility this past season, tossed the hammer 200’3”/61.03m on her final attempt to vault into a lead with a mark that no rival was able to better.
Sophomore Fred Dorsey (U.S. Virgin Islands) placed fifth in the long jump with a best mark of 23’11”/ 7.29m (+1.72)
The NACAC U23 Championships will continue through Sunday.
2016 NCAA 100m Hurdles Champion will compete beginning on Saturday. The meet will serve as another Olympic tune-up for the first freshman to win the NCAA short hurdles title. Camacho-Quinn will represent Puerto Rico.
2016 NCAA 400m Hurdles Champion Kiah Seymour will represent Team USA.
Nugent wins Olympic tune-up
Kentucky Class of 2015 alum – the NCAA Bronze Medalist that season – won her first race since qualifying for the Olympic Games in the 400m hurdles at Jamaica Trials a few weeks ago.
Nugent ran 55.69 in rainy conditions to win the Canada Tracktown Classic in Edmonton, Alberta.
Wildcats heading to Rio
Six Wildcats have qualified to compete in athletics at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
Andrew Evans will represent Team USA in the discus after he placed third at Olympic Trials last week.
Leah Nugent qualified for Rio in the 400m hurdles at Jamaica Trials.
Alumni Rondel Sorrillo, a UK volunteer assistant coach who trains in Lexington, and Mikel Thomas both qualified for the Olympics at the Trinidad and Tobago trials.
Freshman Camacho-Quinn (Puerto Rico – 100m hurdles) and Luis Orta (Venezuela – marathon) are also already qualified for the Olympic Games. Camacho-Quinn has never competed internationally so she was still eligible to compete at U.S. Trials, as she is an American citizen.
