The Kentucky women’s golf team has signed highly rated high school stars Claire Cameron and Sarah Fite during the fall signing period this week. Both signed national letters of intent with the University of Kentucky and will join the Wildcats for the 2017-18 season.
Both Cameron and Fite are highly touted prospects. Cameron is ranked No. 43 in the Golfweek Magazine’s class of 2017 rankings while Fite checks in at No. 96.
“I am really excited about our class of signees this fall,” head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “Claire and Sarah are both very strong players and they will add even more depth to our team. We always strive to recruit the strongest players in our state and around the country, and I believe we are adding two of the best to our program.”
Claire Cameron
Cameron, from Martinsville, Indiana, has won a remarkable 41 tournaments during her decorated junior career. Currently a senior at Martinsville High School, she has qualified for the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship four different times, including a 2015 medalist finish.
“Claire has been a successful player for a long time and we look for her to add a consistent level of play to our team,” Borst said. “She knows how to win and has competed at the highest level in junior golf for years. Claire will bring a great deal of experience to our program along with a strong passion for our university. We couldn’t be happier that Claire decided to sign with us and become part of our Wildcat family.”
Cameron played in qualifiers for both the 2015 and 2016 U.S. Women’s Open. In 2016, she was the top finishing junior in her qualifier in 21st place, behind eight professional and 12 college players. She was selected as one of five Americans to play in the 2015 and 2016 Junior Orange Bowl International tournaments.
The three-time Indiana Golf Association Player of the Year posted four top-five and seven top-10 finishes on the American Junior Golf Association Tour, including winning the 2014 AJGA Qualifier in Columbus, Indiana. She also notched two top-three finishes on the PGA Junior Series Golf Tour. A two-time Golfweek Magazine All-America Team selection, Cameron became the youngest player to ever win the Indiana Girls’ State Championship when she won it in 2013 as a 14-year-old.
Cameron has made her school’s honor roll in four different trimesters.
“I love how passionate Coach Borst and Coach (Brian) May are about their golf program at UK,” Cameron said. “I also love that Kentucky is in the best golf conference in the country, the SEC.”
Fite is the top player from Kentucky in the class of 2017. The Maysville, Kentucky, product won the 2016 Kentucky High School Athletic Association Golf State Championship last month in Bowling Green, Kentucky. She climbed out of a three-shot deficit on the final day to shoot a 1-under-par 71 in the final round and become the first girl at Mason County High School to win the KHSAA Golf State Championship.
Just a couple of weeks later, Fite was named the 2016 Golf House Kentucky Junior Girls Player of the Year.
“Sarah is another great addition to our program who has always had a strong passion for our university,” Borst said. “She is one of the best players in our state, and I know she will compete hard for Kentucky each and every day. Sarah also has a great deal of experience at the national level and is a very determined and hardworking player. We are excited about adding the defending state champion to our program and we can’t wait to have her be a part of our Wildcat family next fall.”
Fite has been named to the Kentucky All-State Team her last three seasons and to the All-Region Team in all four seasons in high school. She’s the first girl in Mason County High School history to win her regional tournament in back-to-back years.
Fite owns a long list of high school and junior tournament championships, including the Mason Country Girls Invitational the last two years. In this past year’s championship run, she posted a 3-under-par 69, the lowest round ever recorded in the event. Over the summer, she won the Kentucky Junior PGA Championship Qualifier in Bardstown, Kentucky, as well as the Kentucky Junior Masters in Lexington. Fite placed second in the 2016 Kentucky Junior Amateur when she lost in a playoff.
An honor-roll student who carries a 4.0 grade-point average, Fite has been nominated for both the USGA-AJGA President’s Leadership Award and the AJGA Scholastic Junior All-America Team. She received the Robert E. Yancey Scholarship at the Natural Resource AJGA event in 2015 and 2016.
“I fell in love with the campus and practice facility,” Fite said of choosing UK. “I really like the coaches and my teammates. They are great.”
