Following a ranked win and an undefeated week of play, sophomore Ryotaro Matsumura has been named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week.
Matsumura had a phenomenal week of play, going 2-0 in both singles and doubles. Matsumura earned his first ranked win downing Josh Hager of Notre Dame in a three-hour marathon match on Sunday. He won 0-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-0) as the No. 1 singles player. Matsumura helped partner Trey Yates defeat Brendon Kempin and Grayson Broadus, 6-0 during the match against the Fighting Irish.
The sophomore also helped UK to earn its first victory over ranked team when he defeated Vincent Lin of No. 25 Duke, 6-3, 6-2. He and Yates also took down Jason Lapidus and TJ Pura from the Blue Devils in the match, 6-2.
The Fukui, Japan native is currently ranked No. 17 in the latest Oracle/ITA Men’s National Singles Rankings. The team is ranked No. 14.
Kentucky will be back in action for the ITA Kickoff on Friday in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The event is hosted by Oklahoma State University and will run through Saturday.
