The Centre women’s basketball team was bested by a score of 50-40 by host Hendrix in a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) matchup on Sunday afternoon at Grove Gymnasium. The Colonels move to 6-18 overall and 4-9 in SAA action, while the Warriors improve to 14-10 on the season and 8-5 in conference play.
After Hendrix jumped out to a 25-13 halftime lead, Centre would outscore the Warriors 27-25 in the second half.
The Colonels minimized the Hendrix advantage to 11 in the third quarter, before shrinking the deficit to eight points at 40-32 following a jump shot by sophomore forward Abigail Stewart (LaGrange, Ky.) with just under three minutes to play.
Unfortunately for Centre, the Warriors would outscore Centre 10-8 the rest of the way to hold on for the SAA triumph.
Sophomore guard Lakken Miller (Liberty, Ky.) scored a team-high 13 points for Centre on 5-of-10 shooting, including a 2-of-5 showing from behind the arc. Stewart added 10 points, connecting on 4-of-6 field goals to go with four rebounds and a pair of blocks in the contest.
Hailey Bode netted a game-high 14 points for the Warriors, sinking 10-of-13 of shots from the charity stripe. Madison Martin had 13 markers off the bench for Hendrix, while Sara Dyslin finished with eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds in the win.
The Colonels shot 27.8 percent (15-of-54) from the field compared to the Warriors shooting 29.5 percent (13-of-44) on field goals.
Rebounds were an even 39-39 in the game, while points in the paint were knotted at 20-20. Hendrix held an 11-2 advantage in points off turnovers, but Centre outscored the Warriors 13-7 in second chance points.
The Colonels close the regular season schedule with a road contest at Sewanee next Saturday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. CT. Centre defeated the Tigers by a score of 65-62 to open SAA play on Dec. 3.
