Following two terrific performances on the road, Northern Kentucky men’s basketball player Carson Williams was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week.
Williams started the week with a career-high 22 points at Cleveland State. He shot a blistering 10-of-14 from the floor and helped Northern Kentucky pick up its eighth true-road win of the year.
For an encore, Williams posted his fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds at Youngstown State.
Over the course of the two road games, the Owenton, Kentucky (Owen County HS), native averaged 16.5 points and eight rebounds per game, while shooting a sensational 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the floor.
This is the third time this season Williams has won the freshman honor for the Horizon League. He first picked up the accolade after the opening weekend of play (Nov. 14) when he scored 15 points in the season-opener against Earlham and followed with a 10-point, 14-rebound double-double at Illinois. Williams also collected the honor on Dec. 19 after tallying a career-high 17 points, while just missing a double-double with nine rebounds against Eastern Illinois. Williams also drew the task of guarding the Eagles’ Bogdan Bilznyuk, who entered as the nation’s 14th best scorer at 22.7 ppg, and held the prolific scorer to just 12 points on 4-of-14 shooting.
Williams, Drew McDonald, Lavone Holland II and Mason Faulkner have combined to win seven weekly awards this season. The quartet of Norse is an integral part of an NKU team that sits at 18-10 overall and 9-6 in the Horizon League. NKU hosts Wright State in a mid-week league tilt on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
