Kentucky State University men’s golf teed off for the first time this season, facing off with nine other schools in the opening round of the Don Benbow Invitational at the Jacksonville Beach Golf course.
Six Thorobreds took their swings against 47 other competitors with an as freshman James Kimbrough came out as the front runner in the early going. Kimbrough sits in the middle of the pack tied at 26th as he finished 11 strokes over par, shooting an 82 on the day.
Jackson Juerling of the Indiania University Purdue University of Indianapolis set the tone as he was the lone competitor to finish the day under par at 70.
Fellow freshman Rick McGraw ended the day 12 strokes over par, putting him in a tie for 31st. Senior Neal Wells and junior Joseph White matched each other stroke for stroke at 13 over at the 34th position.
As a squad, the Thorobreds finished in the lower third of rankings shooting 333 on the day for 49 strokes over par.
Day two will begin at 7 a.m. ET to finish out the tournament and the Thorobreds will remain in Florida to finish out the week at the Bulldog Invitational on Wednesday and Thursday.
