The Thomas More College baseball team opened the 2017 season today (Monday, March 6, 2017) with a 10-5 win over Bridgewater (Va.) College on the first day of the Central Florida Invitational at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale, Florida.
With the win, the Saints are 1-0 and with the loss, the Eagles fall to 5-5. The game was tied at 4-4 after six innings Thomas More scored two in the first, one in the second and one in the fifth, while allowing the Eagles to score one in the second one in the fifth and two in the sixth. Bridgewater would score one run in the top of the eighth to take a 5-4 lead, but Thomas More would plate six runs in the bottom of the eighth and then hold the Eagles scoreless in the ninth for the 10-5 victory.
The Saints were led at the plate by senior center fielder Casey Metzger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills), who was three-for-five with a double and a run batted-in. Junior second baseman Ben Laumann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-three with a home run and three RBI. Sophomore left fielder Joshua Boeckmann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-five with a double and three RBI.
Senior pitcher Logan Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) started and pitched five innings, but had a no decision as he gave up two runs (both earned) on four hits and struck out one. Senior pitcher Josh Cain (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) earned the win as he pitched three innings of relief and gave up three runs (all earned) on five hits, while striking out two. Sophomore pitcher Adam Ruwe (Park Hills, Ky./Covington Catholic) pitched a scoreless ninth inning and struck out one.
Thomas More returns to action tomorrow when it plays Rhodes College at 2:30 p.m. at the Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Florida.
